The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office is currently involved in Neighborhood Watch Programs in a number of our local communities. In support of President Bush's call for additional volunteers we are ready to expand our Neighborhood Watch program throughout the County. The Executive Director of the National Sheriff's Association updated us on the Neighborhood Watch - new counter-terrorism initiative. The release stated: "In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, our national focus has centered on the idea of homeland security. Although homeland security is a broad issue, it encompasses, at it's grassroots level, the idea of securing our own homes and neighborhoods. This has created a new role for NSA's National Neighborhood Watch Program.
Americans do not want to feel helpless. They want to know what role they can play in the fight against terrorism. The existing structure of Neighborhood Watch groups throughout the Nation is the network through which timely information and new training will be delivered to America."
In Minnehaha County, our limited staff has a jurisdiction that covers nearly 800 square miles. The eyes and ears of the public can be our most important asset on our fight against crime and potential acts of terrorism. If you have an interest in answering the President's call by becoming part of our expanding Neighborhood Watch Program, contact us at: 367-4300 or e-mail me at
